When people speak of watches from Zlatoust, they usually recall their powerful character, distinctive appearance and military heritage. Yet one characteristic truly sets AGAT apart: its water resistance.

This is far more than a specification on paper. At the Zlatoust Watch Factory, water resistance is part of the brand’s DNA. AGAT watches were not created for everyday city life: they were commissioned by the USSR Ministry of Defence for military divers. The brief was uncompromising: keep water out, ensure reliable timekeeping and preserve legibility in the darkness of deep water.

That is why the water resistance of AGAT watches is not a marketing story, but a core engineering principle.

What’s the secret?

It begins with the case. An AGAT watch from the Zlatoust Watch Factory features an all-metal monocoque case with no caseback. The case is machined from a single piece of metal. The fewer joints and components, the better the water resistance and the more reliably the movement performs under pressure.

The second critical component is the crystal. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal more than 2 mm thick, engineered to withstand demanding conditions. It is an integral part of the watch’s protective system.

The third line of defence is the crown. It is protected by a double-sealed screw-down cap that reliably prevents moisture ingress. Developed at the factory, the system uses internal and external caps that are loosely coupled: they stay together while moving independently. As the outer cap is tightened, the inner cap remains stationary and is pressed firmly against the silicone gasket in the threaded sleeve. Unlike many similar designs, this helps prevent gasket deformation and loss of water resistance through friction over time.

The factory’s water-resistance test is equally exacting. Watches are not simply immersed in water; every test follows a precise controlled procedure.

AGAT Watch Testing

The watch is secured in a holder above the waterline in a sealed chamber. Air is introduced to create excess pressure. If the case has even a minute leak, pressure inside the watch begins to equalise. The watch is then lowered into water and the chamber pressure is returned to normal. Escaping air forms a stream of bubbles at the leak point, allowing technicians to verify water resistance quickly and identify the precise location of any fault. Any watch that fails the test is returned for rectification.
